Rachmaninov revisited Celebrated in his day not only as a great composer, Sergei Rachmaninov was also admired as an outstanding pianist who was a peerless interpreter of his own works including the piano concerti and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini. It is well known that he was in effect the sole pianist capable of performing his most demanding Third Piano Concerto and his performances and recording of the concerto came to be considered as the definitive ones. The relationship between performance, interpretation, and Rachmaninov's own life is addressed in this film by young pianists. They explore the evolution of interpretation over the past few decades with brief excerpts of recordings by Rachmaninov as contrasted with contemporary performances by today's well-known young pianists as they comment on the differences (or similarities) of their approach. La grande danza - Aterballetto in Milan Choreographies by Jirí Pokorny (Words & Space), Giuseppe Spota (Narcissus), Philippe Kratz (Phoenix) Aterballetto is the principal producing and touring dance company in Italy. They are well-known for their ability to shift their style across a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop and jazz. Jirí Pokorny's 'Words and Space' is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate, and very poetic. 'Phoenix' is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth once again. Choreographer Philippe Kratz tries to understand who we were and what we are capable to become. In 'Narcissus' Giuseppe Spota takes a look at the youth of today. Are they ready to come out of their virtual frames and face the mirror ofeveryday life? Or will they all end up like Narcissus,alone to admire and cherish themselves? Directed by Andreas Morell

Great Conductors: Pierre Boulez - Emotion and Analysis The conductor Pierre Boulez described his relationship with Béla Bartók (1881-1945) as a 'sympathy between musicians': both belong to the 20th century's most influential artists. A key work of Bartók is the 'Concerto for Orchestra', which was premiered in Boston in 1944. The Film 'Emotion and Analysis' follows Pierre Boulez in his rehearsals of this composition with the Berlin Philharmonic in the spectacular setting of the monastery Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Lisbon. Pierre Boulez explains in a series of interviews the historical origins of Bartók's late work, his own personal style of interpretation and his role as conductor as well as his love of composing.
