- 1:49Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Last Words
classical music documentary
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Last Words The great German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was greatly admired for his interpretive insight, note-perfect control of the tonal qualities, and shadings of color in his voice, for exceptional rhythmic sense and impeccable diction. His reputation as a lieder singer is so high - he had a repertoire of more than 3.000 songs - that it is easy to forget his extensive list of operatic roles. In this conversation Fischer-Dieskau reveals for the last time on camera the secrets of his outstanding career. His 'Last Words' provide a deep insight into the extraordinary artistic life of one of the most famous and prolific lieder singers of our time. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau died in May 2012 at the age of 86. Directed by Bruno Monsaingeon 2013

- 5:06The Lost Paradise, a portrait of Arvo Pärt
classical music documentary
Directed by Günter Atteln He is the most performed contemporary composer in the world. Nevertheless, he also rarely ventures out in public, keeps quiet about his music, feels at home in the forests of Estonia and generates therewith - perhaps involuntarily - the impression of a recluse, which is attributed to him again and again: Arvo Pärt. The Estonian composer, who will celebrate his 90th birthday on September 11, 2025, verily exudes even solely by his appearance an aura of a mystic or an ascetic. He himself says: 'I am no prophet, no cardinal, not a monk, not even a vegetarian.' But he is without a doubt a devout man, who has been a member of the Russian Orthodox Church since 1970, and under pressure from the Soviet apparatus of power was forced to leave his native Estonia in 1980. Via Vienna he arrived in Berlin, which for the next 30 years would become his second home and also the starting point for his international career. 'The Lost Paradise' is the first international documentary about Arvo Pärt. It is quite an astonishment that such a shy artist has given his consent to be accompanied by a camera for an entire year: In his native Estonia, travelling to Germany, Italy, and Japan, where Pärt received the Praemium Imperiale, the world's most prestigious award in the field of music, in October 2014. The film is framed by the identically named stage production 'Adam's Passion,' featuring three key works by Arvo Pärt, which American director Robert Wilson brought to the stage in May 2015 in a former submarine factory, the 'Noblessner Foundry' in Tallinn.

- 12:15Wagner´s Jews
classical music documentary
Wagner´s Jews Richard Wagner was notoriously anti-Semitic, and his writings on Jews were later embraced by Hitler and the Nazis. But for years, many of Wagner's closest associates were Jews - young musicians who became personally devoted to him, and provided crucial help to his work and career. Why were they drawn to him? And how could Wagner even accept their embrace? These questions are at the heart of 'Wagner's Jews', the first film to focus on Wagner's complex personal relationships with Jews. Filmed on location in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, 'Wagner's Jews' reveals this remarkable story through archival sources, re-enactments, interviews, and performances of original musical works by Wagner's Jewish colleagues. Featuring Zubin Mehta and Leon Botstein among others, the film also explores the ongoing controversy over performing Wagner's music in Israel. The same questions asked in Wagner's time still resonate today: is it possible to separate the art from its creator? Can sublime music transcend prejudice and bigotry, and the weight of history? Directed by Hilan Warshaw 2013
